Mí Mismo, Aumentada. Myself, Augmented.

As time passes, I fall more and more in love with the city of Córdoba and the Argentine culture. Every day brings new challenges with it, but with each challenge I grow and learn as I become unrecognizable. At first, I thought that I would become a new person after these six months, but instead I am learning how I am in a new context. Córdoba Sydney loves mate and loves to drink espresso in the small resto bar near Parque de las Tejas. She is not afraid of public transportation and is interested in talking to strangers to make new friends. Although Houghton Sydney would never do those things, especially alone and with confidence, the Córdoba Sydney is not a new, different Sydney. Córdoba Sydney is the same Sydney, augmented. What I'm learning is that you do not change in a new culture, but rather you add things to your personality.

Last week was full of new and different things that reminded me how to be myself in another culture. First, and perhaps most importantly, I found a guitar. In the USA, when I had free time and quiet, I played the guitar only to practice and listen to my favorite songs without using the Internet. It was a source of comfort when I felt sad or bored. I never expected to find a guitar to play in my host family’s house. Now I can play my favorite songs and learn the new ones I hear at the boliches or the radio. Also, on Friday of last week we went to Ascochinga, to a ranch. We learned how to cook asado and fritos, we rode horses, and we spent all day in the fields with fresh air (and a little rain). I like cities, they’re important for society and they serve a purpose, but I LOVE fields, forests, and mountains. So, I planned a trip for my group to Cosquín, a small town in the Sierras Chicas. Last Thursday we went by the Tren de Las Sierras, which takes a beautiful path through the Sierra Mountains, and we did all the things I love doing. We climbed a mountain called Cerro Pan de Azucar, and swam in the Cosquín River. In short, this past week I did all the things I love doing with amazing friends in beautiful places. I discovered how to be myself in Argentine culture. What’s more, every day I discover something else, something new to add to my self-image. While I read, speak, and dream in a new language, as I grow in a different culture, I become myself, augmented.
